When I edited the newsletter, I always used a single space at the end of
a sentence, and often deleted the extra spaces in
electronically-submitted text. No one complained. I picked up the habit
from the instructional manual for PageMaker, which suggested that two
spaces at the end of sentences often creates white streaks through the
text (which is, I believe, what Bill referred to).
Can I assume that Carla, because she believes in not changing a
standard, never rides in a car or plane? As for teaching our students, I
don't care how many spaces they leave at the end of a sentence. I'm more
interested in their sentences. (I would, I might note, be very happy if
I could get them to use a ten- or eleven-point font. I've considered not
accepting papers that are in eight-, twelve-, or fourteen-point, but
enough of my students already fail as is.)
