Greg,

If this is a software is potentially to be used by everyone, you can
put it at the existing "public" place:
/software/programname/version/ (then it would be ideal place to put it).

/software (is writable and readable by user 'software').

The user 'software' is for everyone (who does not have root access)
to install software that is visible throughout cluster.
All the /software dir (and subdirs) should be readable/executable by
anyone.

Not sure if that fits all your needs.

Thanks,

Robin
