Hi All,

I'll add that this syposium is for folks who have registered to survey an atlas block as part of this next Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas. If you registered for an atlas block then you should have received this announcement. If you haven't registered for an atlas block yet then go to the OBBA II web-site and register for one today.

If a block you want to survey is already registered, don't worry. You can still survey in that block and submit your observations.

I would encourage you to regsiter for a survey block of your own because it will give you an opportunity to become more familiar with bird life in your area, and there are LOTS of blocks that need to be surveyed.

The last breeding bird survey, completed in the 80's, helped to understand the distribution of breeding birds in the state and help to identify key species that might need conservation help.

One interesting area that might be interesting to register and survey, if it no one has chosen it yet, is Oxford-Reilly Road towards Indian Creek preserve.

The reason for this is that an Oxford-area birder & amateur ornithologist named Jennie Brooks wrote a chapter in her book, "Under Oxford Trees", about "The Old Riley Road". This book was published in 1911. In this chapter of her book she discusses how she encountered Northern Bobwhite, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Loggerhead Shrikes along the old riley road. She even described nest-building behavior for the shrikes, which suggests that they bred in the area and were rather plentiful. It would be interesting to compare the area now to what it might have been like in 1909 or 10 when she was writing her book.

Anyway, I definitely encourage you to take part in this next Breeding Bird Atlas. The regional coordinator for the area that this listserv covers is Ned Keller. I'll try and provide contact info. for Ned later so that you can contact him for more specific information.

Thanks and good birding!

Casey
