Greetings... Charlie Saunders and Steve Pelikan took me on a trip to the
area around the airport in Boston, Indiana in Wayne County. In the fields on
the east side of the airport, along Druley Road, there was a flock of ~100+
Lapland Longspurs moving in and out of the cornstubble. The birds were in
breeding plumage, and many were singing. There seemed to be equal numbers of
Horned Larks present, as well. It's hard to estimate the longspur numbers,
since they were moving around so much and once on the ground, nearly
impossible to see amidst the stubble.
An adult male Northern Harrier was also flying around the airport grounds.
We missed Vesper Sparrows, etc., and some other field birds we'd hoped to
find, despite stopping and scanning a number of suitable roadside spots and
large farm fields.
A brief stop at Treaty Line Road yielded zero shorebirds, but others might
well do better, I hope.
Finally, we made a very brief stop at the Hueston Woods Nature Preserve, and
saw a Broad-winged Hawk fly back and forth overhead, giving its tea kettle
whistle, and being chased by a crow.
Steve was roaming about with his parabolic microphone and got some audio
recordings of the Longspurs and even the Broad-winged Hawk.
Take care,
