ATTENTION PHILOSOPHY MAJORS
Applications sought for the
Linda Singer Scholarship in Philosophy
Linda Singer was a member of Miami’s Philosophy Department from 1980 until her early death in
1990. In her ten years as a faculty member, Professor Singer was a productive scholar, an engaging
teacher, and a valued colleague. Professor Singer was known for her work in feminist theory,
aesthetics, and social and political philosophy, and she is the author of a posthumously published
book entitled Erotic Welfare: Sexual Theory and Politics in the Age of Epidemic. Linda’s varied interests and
vivacious personality endeared her to students and colleagues across the university. In honor of
Linda Singer, and thanks to the generosity of her parents Eugene and Vivian Singer, the Linda
Singer Scholarship in Philosophy commemorates her contributions and commitments to
philosophical research and intellectual community.
The Department of Philosophy annually awards this scholarship to a Miami University sophomore
or junior whose primary or secondary major is Philosophy. The scholarship is awarded in
recognition of student excellence and is for a student’s junior and/or senior year of study. For the
2017-18 academic year, up to $8000 is available, to be awarded to one or two students. Miami
University philosophy majors currently in their sophomore or junior year (by virtue of class
standing) are encouraged to apply for the scholarship by submitting an application to the
Department of Philosophy. Awards will be made by the Department of Philosophy based primarily
on academic merit.
The application should include:
 a statement of goals and purposes in pursuing the study of philosophy
 a writing sample
 at least one letter of recommendation from a college faculty member
 a transcript (this can be an unofficial bannerweb printout)
 a list of philosophy courses taken, the course professor, and the grade received
Applications and supporting documents should be sent electronically in a single pdf to:
Professor Emily Zakin at [log in to unmask]
(letter of recommendation should arrive separately, directly from the instructor)
Applications are due April 12, 2017
