As previously announced, Miami University's two existing centrally
managed NetNews servers (on MiamiU and MiaVX1) will be consolidated into
into one centrally managed NetNews server this summer.
It is presently anticipated the new server will be made available for
testing on or about 15 June, that it will go to production status on or
before 1 July, and the separate servers on MiamiU and MiaVX1 will be removed
from service on or about 15 July.
In conjunction with the server consolidation, the reorganization and
consolidation of the Miami-specific hierarchy of newsgroups ( mu.* ), begun
last summer, is continuing. In reorganizing the mu.* hierarchy, an attempt
is being made to adhere to general NetNews newsgroup naming conventions
and to organize the newsgroups in a generally more intuitive and readily
understandable manner.
The following subgroupings are being introduced:
mu.comp.* for computing related newsgroups
mu.info.* for information dissemination newsgroups
mu.instruct.* for instruction-related newsgroups, including
course-specific newsgroups (mu.instruct.course.*)
mu.lib.* for Miami University Libraries newsgroups
mu.misc.* for miscellaneous newsgroups, such as the ride board
mu.org.* for organization-related newsgroups
mu.talk.* for general discussion newsgroups
The following document lists the mu.* newsgroups presently expected to
appear on the new consolidated server when it enters service. Your comments
and suggestions are encouraged, and should be sent to [log in to unmask]
