Supply Chain Management--This is one that happens to be in my academic area
of logistics so I'll take a shot at answering Virginia and Susan's question.
Supply chain management is exactly as it sounds, managing the flow
of supply across the entire supply chain. In other words, managing the flow
of materials from the initial supplier of raw material all the way through
to the final point of sale (and even including the recycling of product
sometimes). It really is a way of focusing on maximizing efficiencies and
minimizing costs for everyone involved in the creation and distribution of
products or services to ultimately provide the optimal product and service
to the end customer. Theory being that if you are looking at the entire
supply chain as one continuous system the end result will be better than if
each individual company involved in the process (different suppliers, the
manufacturers, etc) focuses on optimizing only its own needs and interests.
The theory sounds straight forward but in practice it is very
complex. You're talking about companies sharing a lot of information that
traditionally would be considered proprietary and being to work together to
coordinate systems. It means a lot of give and take in how a company is
willing to operate in order to be in sinq with the others in the chain--the
ultimate in boundarylessness. A few companies that have made pretty strong
advances in this area are MacDonald's and WalMart.
I will end there for those who "really don't want to know that much
about it." If you want more, let me know.
        Have a good weekend!
