Hello Everyone-

Here's a quick note to fill you in on the Oyler Project for this semester.
For you newcomers, Oyler is a school in Lower Price Hill that serves
mostly African-Americans and Urban Appalachian students. Ninety four
percent of the families fall below the federal poverty levels.
Barb Lubic was a visiting professor at Miami last year and she started the
project to infuse literature into the lives of Oyler students. This
project is run by the Oyler Literacy Foundation. Barb left Miami to take a
position at another university and now Leslie and I are trying to keep the
project going.
The president of Scholastic Books has offered to sell 2,000 top quality
children's literature books for $2,000 to the Oyler Literacy Foundation.
We are requesting your support via a donation to the book fund. For a
$1.00 donation you receive a book plate to inscribe a message for an Oyler
student. The book plate will then be placed in the front cover of one of
the Scholastic Books and given to an Oyler Elementary student. Your
demonstration of community caring will make it possible to bring enjoyment
and enhanced reading skills to all Oyler students
In addition, we would love your support at the school. We will be going
to the school on Friday, October 29 with approximately 80-100 EDP 201
students to distribute the books and run activities with the children.
Since it is the Friday before Halloween, we also encourage you to dress up
as book characters and participate in the Halloween activities, such as the
Halloween parade. For those of you enrolled in 695, we were able to get
695 hours last year for attending and I assume that we will be able to
again this year.(Dr. Witte?)
Please let me know if you are interested in donating money or coming to
Oyler. We will be there from approximately 9AM to 3PM. If you have any
questions, please email me or find me in the office.

Thanks,
Kristine Joaquin
