As a sometimes contributor to this list, and as someone more interested in sociolinguistics and discourse than linguistics when I first sapproached the grammar question, I am impressed by the gradual shaping of a discourse community over this list. There are still disagreements and there are several vocal opponents to the direction of the 3S committee, but in general, consensus has been building at least on principles and, from my perspective, there seems to be more sensitive and realistic concern for the views and agendas of practicing teachers. I'm sure that much of this took place f-2-f at NCTE, but much of it has happened by virtue of virtual discussion. That's so neat! judy Graduate School of Education Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey 10 Seminary Place New Brunswick, NJ 08901-1183 732 932 7496 FAX 732 932 7552 Eternity is in love with the productions of time -- Wm Blake To join or leave this LISTSERV list, please visit the list's web interface at: http://listserv.muohio.edu/archives/ateg.html and select "Join or leave the list" Visit ATEG's web site at http://ateg.org/
