     I like the games you suggest for making this (or any subject)
interesting, but don't they imply that interest needs to be imported
artificially?  If grammar is the meaning making system of the language
and language is what makes us inherently human, what subject could be of
greater depth or importance?  Perhaps he (and the book) create the
impression that it's someone else's language they are talking about.
Bringing the students' own internal grammar to light is an inherently
interactive process.
     I'm horrified, too, but less patient than you are.  If you don't
love the subject, stop doing harm.  Don't teach it.
