David Foster Wallace's article "Tense Present: Democracy, ENglish, and the Wars over Usage" is a careful--and often very funny--argument for the teaching of standard English and a rebuttal of the linguist's descriptive approach. It appeared in Harper's Magazine, April 2001. I think many on the list will find it provocative.
