Rex,
I'm curious about why you are teaching appositives to
seventh graders. Is it because you want to, or are you required to? There
is nothing that shows that doing so is effective, and there are some good
arguments that it can be harmful.
Ed - What could be simpler than an appositive - except, of course, its
name? Do you teach adjectives to 7th graders? Of course! Why - because
they are fully fluent in the use of adjectives! Indeed, they are also
fully fluent - "My dog, Spot, . . ." - in appositives! Why not teach
appositives along with adjectives?

PS: 7th graders are also fully fluent in subordinate clauses - "'Why
were you late?' - 'Because I forgot!'" In fact, they have probably
fluent in dependent clauses since they were 2!
