Colleagues, The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) has recently received funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) for a two-year project, "Preserving Local Television." This project will address the problems of preserving the vital yet endangered record of 20th Century American life contained in local television footage and programming. Conducted in association with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), the project will open a dialog between archivists and broadcasters, and through the analysis of case studies will develop guidelines for the preservation and management of the products of local television. An important and formative part of the project is a survey of local television collections in the hands of archives, museums, libraries and (in some cases) the stations themselves. A database that will result from this survey will not only help with the selection of case studies for the project, but it will provide a useful resource for understanding the extent of local television materials in America and the breadth of their preservation needs. We would like to enlist your help with this survey. If you know of any existing local television collections, regardless of condition or accessibility, please send a note to Karen Cariani, WGBH Educational Foundation ([log in to unmask]) with station call letters, city, state, repository, and (if known) contact person. Colleagues responsible for local TV collections may respond directly to the survey in electronic or hard-copy form if they wish: You can access it at http://granite.sentex.net/~ritchpat/websurve.html. If you would like further information on the Preserving Local Television project, feel free to contact Project Manager Sharon Blair at [log in to unmask] For more on the Association of Moving Image Archivists, visit its website at www.amianet.org.
