I am also 58 years old and have to disagree that "older" teachers are the  
most reluctant to teach grammar.  I use sentence diagramming and other  
strategies to teach my 9th graders grammar.  I do this because I am  appalled they do 
not even know how the parts of speech function in their own  language.  I find 
just the opposite to be true.  Younger teachers  resist teaching grammar 
because they received their own English education  during the anti-grammar years 
(1970's through the 1990's).  How anyone can  consider him or herself 
well-educated without a well-grounded understanding of  the grammar of his or her 
native language is beyond  me.
