I am also 58 years old and have to disagree that "older" teachers are the most reluctant to teach grammar.  I use sentence diagramming and other strategies to teach my 9th graders grammar.  I do this because I am appalled they do not even know how the parts of speech function in their own language.  I find just the opposite to be true.  Younger teachers resist teaching grammar because they received their own English education during the anti-grammar years (1970's through the 1990's).  How anyone can consider him or herself well-educated without a well-grounded understanding of the grammar of his or her native language is beyond me.
