This is really neat. So your sentence:
 
I was at the killing of the man.
 
would mean
 
I was in the process of killing the man.
 
OR
I was killing the man.
 
Could you have an instrument subject argument or any other inanimate  subject 
participant? For example, could you say in Old Irish Gaelic:
    ?The knife was at the killing of the man.
    ?The rope was at the hanging of the man.
    The sheriff was at the hanging of the man.
 
Or could you say:  The man was at the dying.
 
Interesting.
 
The turkey is at the browning?  
 
Hmm.  Something to think about.
