That's great, Michael.  And I can get an adjectival reading  here:
 
 
When I asked him  about the schedule for today, he told us that the party is  
cancelled.
 
Contrast:
 
When I asked him  about the schedule for today, he told us that the party is  
off.
 
And these examples are  fundamentally different from below (where 'cancel' is 
clearly part of  the passive verb):
 
 
When I asked him  about the schedule for today, he told us that the party had 
been  cancelled.
