Hi Warren,

I live 10 minutes from the Newburgh Airport (Stewart International Airport, SWF is the code if you are searching for prices to it on-line.)   The problem with flying into Stewart is the limited connections from there.  Unless there is a bus that would take you from Newburgh to Fairfield, you  would need to rent a car or take a cab.  If you don't mind driving, it is 70.43 miles (1hr 39mins--as per MapQuest)  from the airport to Fairfield University.  The highway that takes you there is no more than 5-7 minutes from the airport (you'd only have to drive on 2 different streets).  It is also a scenic highway that goes to Connecticut.

Otherwise, your next best bet is to fly into Kennedy Airport, take the subway to Grand Central Station where you get the Metro North train that goes to Fairfield, Ct.

You might also want to check on Newburgh Airport. It's a bit farther north than White Plains, just south of Kingston and New Paltz. I don't know what kind of transportation arrangements are available from there although I'm sure there are car rentals. It may be somewhat less expensive than flying into JFK.
