One correction: I said "compound" sentence and proceeded to give a complex sentence.  I originally planned to give the compound equivalent to (2): Many sedans are sold in some areas of California, yet more pickup trucks are sold there.  Such a sentence may complicate the issues unnecessarily.  (Many sedans are sold in some areas of California, where more pickup trucks are sold.)  The possiblities of the various connectives may give the student ideas about what he might really be wanting to say.
