ATEGers,
I wish that I were able to attend this conference. I have been reading the listserve for a few years, and I have a great deal of respect for those of you who actively participate in discussion on this list. I was fortunate to attend an all day workshop on grammar at a recent NCTE convention that included some of the people most active on this list.

With regard to the list, I have noticed an evolution of sorts-- from esoteric discussions of the finer points of language and usage (which I do enjoy!) to a more inclusive conversation that invites those of us who are working with middle and high school students. I also appreciate your willingness to provide assistance to classroom teachers (novice and veteran) in approaches to infusing our curriculum with grammar and usage instruction beyond just naming parts of speech.

As far as terminology goes, please keep in mind the varying degree of exposure to teaching grammar of classroom teachers. Know that many teachers rely heavily on the text provided to them by the district (or even state). Some districts, like my own, expect teachers to teach specific grammatical terms, identification, and to some extent their application in real writing. Our students are tested after each six weeks of the quarter to ensure that instruction has occurred and learning is in process.

I look forward to seeing what ATEG's Scope and Sequence looks like, and its ease in interfacing with current district scope and sequence. I wish you well in your much needed endeavor.

Sincerely,

Ms. Marty Sierra-Perry

Craig,

Count me in. I won't be at the ATEG conference, though. I'll be at the biennial St. Olaf Conference on Theology, Music, and the Arts instead, followed by a couple of weeks at the cottage.

Herb,
Can we sign you up for the working group?

I support Ed's concern over terminology. Perhaps there needs to be a

working group that will look not simply at terminology but at the
principles underlying choice of terminology. We've all got our (least)
favorite terms (I don't like "gerund" for English), and if we have some
agreed upon principles for choosing terms we might make some progress at
it. I think what I've read of the scope and sequence discussion bodes
well for developing such principles. I don't suggest that we impose a set
of terms; rather that we make a principled set available.

Ed,
I think that's a very reasonable question to ask. Should we go with
more traditional terminology (like gerund) or for a revised
understanding? Uniform terminology is one issue and what we choose is
another.
Before the conference, I'll be getting materials from England (NATE
curriculum documents), and I'll bring them with me. (I'll also have
ordering information if people want their own copies.)>I believe they
have already addressed that issue; it will be interesting to see their
choices.

Craig

Craig,

Is the "scope" question going to deal with what terminology should
be used, or is that problem going to be left wide open? In one of the
two last issues of the ATEG journal, I noted that "gerund" does not
appear to be an acceptable term.
Thanks,
Ed
