went missing is the simple past tense form
of the "go gerund." The go gerund is only used for activities that we do
as hobbies i.e. go fishing, go swimming. Go missing isn't a hobby.
In this use it seems like missing is used as a participle,not a gerund. So
the correct auxiliary verb would be was missing.
