Andrew and All, I will be very interested in seeing the responses to this inquiry. We do not currently have a "Grammar" pedagogy course at my institution (although we have a 6 hour Linguistics component for our Teacher Preparation candidates), and it is usually incorporated into two other courses (Teaching Writing and Studies in English for Teachers). I hold a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and have just returned to higher education after six years of teaching in the public schools. I have little formal training in linguistics beyond my undergraduate English major. My interest currently is in seeing how other programs treat this issue. I would like to explore adding a Language pedagogy course to complement our Writing pedagogy and Literature pedagogy courses. Dear ATEG members: I'm researching who most typically teaches the grammar course (or preferably two or more classes involving study of language, grammar, and/or methods of incorporating language instruction into one's curriculum) in programs that prepare secondary education students in English Language Arts. Are people with PhDs in linguistics more commonly recruited? Or those with some combination of linguistics, education, comp/rhet, etc.? I'd love to hear about the backgrounds of people who typically teach such courses at your instititutions.
