Thank you, Dr. Spruiell. I'm going to show this to my classes tomorrow. We just had a grammar workshop where I introduced my students to correct usages of the colon and semicolon. Many students have been plunking semicolons all over the place in their papers, but few have used them correctly. I believe that the colon and the semicolon are my favorite punctuation marks: aesthetically, they are quite beautiful in appearance, and when used correctly, they add a subtle distinction to written expression. Maybe if someone has time he or she could outline all of the correct usages for each mark. (If not, I understand!) I am becoming spoiled with all of the "free" advanced grammar lessons that I routinely receive from all of the experts on this list. Thank you, everyone!
There was a piece in the Times a few days ago on semicolons, and I thought it might be useful for class discussions. The Times came out from behind its paywall a while ago, so its site is useful again (link pasted below).
