I know you've shut the gate on me but I still pick up your transmissions on the clandestine radio in my attic and I am moved by the discussion of words vs. reality and the universality of some words, imprecise as they may be.

I was anchored out in the Windward Islands. He was standing in his skiff with his arms on the gunwales of my sailboat, asking me, apparently, if I would like to buy a straw hat like the one he has on.
 
 
I took the photo above and then, while I was still looking at him through the camera, I asked him, in the native patois of the Windward Islands, "Do you like pussy?"
 
Had I had (subjunctive) Sapir-Whorf at hand, I might have tried something else, but no such luck, proving again the validity of "timing is everything".
