Carol - Good point.  In fact, is not rhetoric the very essence of politics?  So I would hope to find much "political" discussion on the list!

I think that the political discussions that are going on now on the list directly relate to speech, grammar, language and rhetoric. These public figures are on display right now for us to listen to, understand, and analyze. What a great opportunity to look at language and grammar in the context of communication. As for keeping politics off of the listserv, every classroom, listserv and group of people is already politicized simply by containing members with political views. It would sort of be like trying to keep oxygen out of the air. I know what you're saying about the topic of "politics" in general being inappropriate for the listserv, but I think what people are focusing on is the speech and rhetoric of the candidates.

Hey, you out there.  I don't find Brad's survey or results anymore "off topic" than the political ramblings I have recently read.

While I enjoy reading about how knowledge of language and grammar can help make us into more critical listeners and evaluators of politicians (I do love Orwell), and I find these views to be very articulate and fascinating, I find that some of the recent posts are too politically biased to qualify as legitimate for this listserve and are no more or less inappropriate than Brad's survey or results.

I do enjoy learning about language and grammar, so maybe we can get back to that minus the political shadings that are so prevalent right now?

Hey Brad...(2) things:

1) You are purposely trying to insult the members of this listserv with your stupid questions.

2) You are so stupid that you actually think your questions are worth answering.

Either way, your continued presence on this list is to say the least ANNOYING, unless, that is, you can actually come up with something interesting and constructive to say. This list is a forum for people who are actually interested in learning about grammar and language, not a dumping site for the ravings of an apparent lunatic.

PS. "a", "e", "i", "o" and "u" are considered vowel sounds in the English language, not consonants, which perhaps could be your first lesson in English grammar.
