Brad,

Coming up with isolated sentences that are subject only to a single,
very specific interpretation, is a near impossibility. What works
rather are sentences in context. When no context is provided, the
respondent tends to invent one in order to be able to fill in whatever
needs filling in.

This will work better if you are set for "color & graphics", not "plain
text".

There is unanimity on these four, except as noted:

I had never eaten such a huge pizza before I went to Italy (2 votes for
"never ate", including mine.)

By the time his heart was transplanted he had undergone many medical
procedures (with acknowledgement that it was not his heart; he was the
recipient, NTS.)

The show had already started when we arrived.

Further input is needed for two of the remaining three. (I'm still
working on the screw-ball lines about "washing-up", which proves the
point that examples designed to teach verb forms should be unambiguous.)

Notice the first verbs are a present tense and the second verbs are a
past tense. Please check one of each pair (even if you didn't
participate in the first round) and send it back to [log in to unmask]
so I won't impose on anyone who may not want to be imposed upon.
