This email arrived from a high-school junior. I sent it back with corrections and the comment "sloppy" and a grade of "F". He's been writing 300-word essays for me (I'm not his teacher) and this is the way he writes. I've let it slide to keep him coming but I'm going to have to start correcting him. He wants to go to West Point but he won't get into a junior college unless he gets some help. His teacher gives him 'atta-boy's and 'keep up the good work' for his writing.

I told him to edit what he writes, to use his spell-checker when he writes on a computer, and that he gets an "F" if everything he writes does not include his name and the date.

Whadaya think? Correct him or let him slide?

The "commander" is an Army Staff Sergeant, as is clearly indicated on his card.

Subject: The G.I. Bill

When you get to thinking about how to pay for college, talk to the recruiter whose card I gave you. Hundreds of thousands of men have gone to college on the G.I. Bill, which I think started during or immediately after WW2, i.e., 1945.
