This, "The good news is that you stepped up to the plate and took a swing at it", is not a mixed metaphor. This is a mixed metaphor: "The good news is that you stepped up to the plate and took a stab at it".
 
Now may we please get back to the point? Allie? Breakfast? Remember? Had? Did?
 
Go ahead. Take a stab at it. Or a swing. Whatever suits you.
