Tom built it himself. If he had had someone build it, he would have
written "Tom spent his
summer weekends at his lake cottage that he had had built in 1995." (Of
course, if that is indeed the meaning, he could just as easily have
written, instead, "Tom spent his summer weekends at his
lake cottage that he built in 1995."
