I developed a good one on line for DARPA in the late 70s. I wrote the basic requirements in English: someone else with a higher security clearance put it into computer language (I never got above Critical Sensitive). It only ran one semester: I worked as a volunteer so I lost no money. The programs that I am developing now are graduate courses in historical linguistics and descriptive linguistics--leaning heavily on Lehmann and Gleeson. Once I finish those, I'll work on English historical linguistics (Pyles and Algeo and Koine (NT) Greek (Machen) historical linguistics. All these are volunteer work also. By then I'll be in my late 70s and to you from failing hands I'll throw the torch. I might add that UCF has many courses with on-line components (or all on line) that do the grading. With 60K students we have to use every method possible. To teach an online grammar course, you need a syllabus, a good text, and good workbook with quizzes and exercises done and graded automatically. You also need provisions for themes to be written on line on specific topic= s by specific deadlines and carefully judged and evaluated--this last part is the hardest and most time-consuming part. The students need to rewrite eac= h theme within a specified time limit correcting all errors and, hopefully, not making more and turning in the themes by a specific deadline or suffer grade penalties--usually a letter grade a day drop. Right now I am setting up graduate courses in both historical and descriptive linguistics with heavy workbook assignment but no themes--just tests requiring analysis, complex thinking, and cogent argument Scott Catledge -----Original Message----- From: Assembly for the Teaching of English Grammar [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of ATEG automatic digest system Sent: Saturday, April 02, 2011 12:00 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: ATEG Digest - 29 Mar 2011 to 1 Apr 2011 (#2011-71) There are 4 messages totalling 658 lines in this issue.
