I agree with Bill's suggestion. 

But I also wonder about what the student is actually referring to. Gatsby does not ask Daisy that question, and she does not say those words. The text reads this way:

 “I wouldn’t ask too much of her,” I ventured. “You can’t repeat the past.”
“Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!”
