In the first scene, Dr. Faustus is striving to attain knowledge that he can only get through dark magic. Two beings appear to him and one is good while the other is evil. Faustus listens to the evil being because he wants to attain the power that the black arts can give him. This shows us that Dr. Faustus is not a morally straight character, but maybe he will have changed his ways by the end of the play? In the next few scenes Dr. Faustus is condemning heaven and pledging his allegiance to hell. It seems he is falling deeper and deeper into the grasp of the dark arts. In the fifth scene, my guess about him turning good is starting to take shape, as he is having trouble deciding whether or not to sell his soul to the devil.
