While, I, too, felt there was a certain kind of elegance to containing that, otherwise, dangling period inside quote marks, I have found that with modern content, this convention could cause confusion. When writing out how a user name should appear, I realized that putting the period inside my quote marks could make it seem as though the period should be included in the user name. Most of the British novels I read are written with such elegance that I am willing to accept the notion my fondness for our own conventions might be a bit parochial. I wonder what others think, Gregg ---- Don Stewart <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > Try this: > > http://www.slate.com/articles/life/the_good_word/2011/05/the_rise_of_logical_punctuation.html > > Compare to the address given: > > http://www.slate.com/articles/life/the_good_word/2011/05/the_rise_of_logical_punctuation.htm > > There's one "l" of a difference! > > Don Stewart > soswriting.com > > > On Tue, Nov 19, 2013 at 4:08 PM, William Hillaker < > [log in to unmask]> wrote: > > > This leads to a 404 page. > > > > > > Grace and Peace, > > > > William R. I can't think of a strong reason why the British version shouldn't be allowed here; the only thing that springs to mind is that it leads to one extra punctuation mark if the quoted portion ends in an abbreviation with a period. I know people may find the post-quote period unaesthetic, but I figure that reaction is partly the result of it being marked. --- Bill Spruiell On 11/20/13 10:13 AM, "Gregg Heacock" <[log in to unmask]> wrote: >Don, > >Thanks for putting us on the right track. > >While, I, too, felt there was a certain kind of elegance to containing >that, otherwise, dangling period inside quote marks, I have found that >with modern content, this convention could cause confusion.
