The Directory Server can be searched on MiamiU (IBM VM/CMS) and MiaVX1 (DEC OpenVMS) by typing PH last_name first_name (where last_name and first_name are actual first and last names) at the command line. (On MiamiU, PH is also accessible through the ENDUSER menu system. To enter ENDUSER, press the <F6> key. Choose 2 Communicate with Others & Access Information, and then 14 Search Miami University's Directory Server.) Searches may include use of a wildcard symbol (*) as part of a name. For example, a search such as PH Public Jo* would locate any person whose last name is Public and whose first name begins with the letters Jo, including Joanne, Joe, John, Joseph, Josephine, etc. These searches will return up to 25 entries of persons matching the search pattern specified; if a search finds more than 25 matches, the search pattern must be narrowed (possibly by adding additional characters of the first_name, etc.). Information returned by default to searches performed at Miami includes an individual's full name, spouse name (if available and authorized for publication), classification (undergraduate, graduate, staff or faculty), University titles, department, division and office locations and phone numbers (if faculty or staff), home address and phone (if available and authorized for publication), college, class and school address and phone number (for students), and an "alias" which is the individual's unique identifier at Miami. Adding the words "return all" following the search pattern, such as, PH last_name first_name RETURN ALL will return all available fields. -- John B Harlan Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS) Coordinator Miami University (Ohio USA) [log in to unmask]
