As students, staff and faculty prepare to leave campus for Thanksgiving break, anyone subscribed to LISTSERV lists at Miami or elsewhere may wish to consider temporarily 'turning off' incoming e-mail from those lists, as a way of helping prevent problems with exhausting their disk space on the centrally-managed, multi-user platforms (MiamiU and MiaVX1). To turn mail off without unsubscribing from a LISTSERV list, send the following command to the appropriate LISTSERV server address: SET listname NOMAIL (where listname is the 8-character-or-less name of the list). For example, if you are subscribed to the Miami University conversation list, MUTalk, you would send the command: SET MUTALK NOMAIL to the LISTSERV server address, LISTSERV@MiamiU (or just LISTSERV if you are sending from an account on the IBM VM/CMS mainframe). Or if you are subscribed to a LISTSERV list outside Miami (such as Travel-L, hosted on LISTSERV@TREARN) you would send the command: SET TRAVEL-L MAIL to the appropriate LISTSERV server address (in this case, LISTSERV@TREARN). When you return to campus after break and wish to resume receiving e-mail from the list(s), simply send the command: SET listname MAIL or SET listname DIGEST to begin receiving regular mail or periodic (usually daily or weekly) compilations of e-mail from the specified list. Please note that these commands are only guaranteed to work with the "Revised LISTSERV" software that runs on many systems worldwide, including our IBM VM/CMS system, MiamiU. Some other mailing list software packages, such as ListProcessor and Majordomo, may have similar features, which may or may not recognize the same command syntax. For authoritative information, send the command: HELP to the appropriate server address. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the MCIS Help Desk (by e-mail at [log in to unmask] or by telephone at 529-7900) and request that your call be queued to me. Happy Thanksgiving!
