I don't think that we have an answer yet as to whether Miami will license Kermit 95. It is certainly one option open to us. MCIS has put in place a Windows 95 Migration Planning team. The team is in the process of testing the Windows 95 operating system, the software packages that run under it, the network impact, hardware and software costs to the institution, training, and related issues. Testing of communication packages is part of this charge. Consultation with faculty, administrative offices, ltc and divisional labs, regional campuses, computing policy committees and the like will be undertaken in order to formulate a planned support schedule and migration path. We need to determine, from a support perspective, how many different communication packages are manageable. Although the Windows offering would provide a nicer client interface, we would still have the option of running the DOS version in the Windows environment. Although the site license cost of Kermit 95 is not high ($2000 the 1st year; $1000 each subsequent year), there is now a cost associated with it. Looking to the future, the network plan calls for a 200 line modem pool for the Oxford campus and a 50 line modem pool for the Hamilton and Middletown campuses that will enable dial-in network connections via ppp. _____________ Kathie Brinkman e-mail: [log in to unmask] Manager, Consulting & Support Client Services, MCIS Miami University voice: 513.529.5947 Oxford, Ohio 45056 fax: 513.529.1496
