ATEG folks: My students are I are puzzling over analysis of a sentence somewhat like this (I simplify it slightly): She was supposed to be elated. (1) How would you analyze that sentence? (Cf. She had to be elated) We consider _elated_ a subjective complement. But if _had to_ is a "semi-auxiliary" (a term learned from Kolln's Understanding English Grammar), is _supposed to_ a semi-auxiliary, as well? (2) Can you refer us to any additional discussions in print of semi-auxiliaries, or of _to BE supposed (to)_? Thanks! Carolyn Kirkpatrick York College/CUNY
