A colleague asked me about the difference between the use of "went" in: I went home. and I went shopping. I replied that the second "went" was obviously a kind of auxiliary. When I looked this up, the only info I could find in my shelf of books was from good ol' Quirk & Randolph, who call "start," "go on," and "get" catenatives live aspectual and modal auxiliaries. This makes sense, but does it include this use of "went"? And is there any other name for this phenomenon? Appreciate any responses I get! Thanks, Jeanie Murphy Pierce College--Puyallup
