As to reflexives, why not just point out to the class that the usages with reflexives in object position will cause them to make an unfavorable impression on some people, and leave it to them to decide which usage to adopt? That would also be an excellent opportunity to launch a discussion on why some usages are preferred over others (whether for true reasons of clarity, or because of simple prejudice), and of the general resistance among authorities to natural change in language. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Johanna Rubba Assistant Professor, Linguistics ~ English Department, California Polytechnic State University ~ San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 ~ Tel.
