As to reflexives, why not just point out to the class that the usages with
reflexives in object position will cause them to make an unfavorable
impression on some people, and leave it to them to decide which usage to
adopt?
 
That would also be an excellent opportunity to launch a discussion on why
some usages are preferred over others (whether for true reasons of
clarity, or because of simple prejudice), and of the general resistance
among authorities to natural change in language.
