I'm new to the listserv and just picked up on the form/function
discussion. I teach grammar/syntax at California State University,
Hayward, California, and I, too, teach form and function although
a few students do seem to have a problem making the distinction.
But it's those same students who wouldn't recognize a verb if it
bit them!  They need some other approach, I suppose, and I'm
open to suggestions!
 
Most of my students are liberal studies majors preparing for the
credential program so that they can teach.  Those of you teaching
out there in K-12--what DO these people need to know?  (Can you
even answer this in an email?)
