Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Instituto Cervantes, it is our pleasure to welcome you all to our Spanish website, the Centro Virtual Cervantes (CVC), at the URL:

http://cvc.cervantes.es

The goals of this new website are those of the Cervantes Institute; that is, to promote the use of the Spanish language and the knowledge of Hispanic cultures with the use of the latest communication technologies.

We have established four specialized forums, to encourage communication worldwide between professionals in the Spanish language and in the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries:

http://cvc.cervantes.es/foros/

For teachers of Spanish as a second or foreign language: ‘Foro didáctico’; for hispanists and those interested in the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries: ‘Foro del hispanista’; for translators, journalists and to discuss language topics: ‘Foro del español de hoy y mañana’; and for translators of computing and communication terminology in Spanish: ‘Foro TIC’. Each Forum has an HTML electronic board, updated weekly, with information about conferences, job offers, publications, etc.

A new Search Engine, El Oteador, allows easy searches of Spanish-related websites about Language, Literature, Universities, Culture, Mass Media and many other topics.

You should also visit our ‘Aula de Lengua’, which contains a number of useful materials for language teachers. In the near future you will find here a course of Spanish via Internet and distance training courses for teachers of Spanish.

On our website you can also find cultural exhibitions, such as ‘El camino de Santiago’, collections of photographs about Spain or pictures from The Prado Museum, etc., as well as reference materials in our virtual library: among others, the latest Francisco Rico edition of Don Quixote, or a database of quotes taken from Hispanic Literature and classified into grammar categories by one of the most renowned Spanish grammarians of the century, Salvador Fernández Ramírez.

Users may choose to register for a free service that will keep them periodically informed via e-mail of new materials on the site.

We look forward to your virtual visit. Opinions and suggestions are welcome.

Sincerely,

M. Carmen Gómez
