I thought that this was a respectable arena on the net where one can
discuss English language related topics, not offensive stuff like the
one I have received this morning..!!!

This is an exceptionally respectable area of the web. But no mailing list
is immune from spam. Every once in a while someone gets our server address
and puts something in here that nobody wants to see. The best thing to do
is to write to the webmaster or postmaster of the originating site and
complain.
Stick with ateg. You will enjoy it and you will learn a great deal. I have.

Indeed, Paul is right. The university computer people mostly do a fine job
filtering out spams. Once in a while one gets through. Not very often.

I've recently come across a reference to "Data Orientated Parsing" -
an approach to grammar, appparently, which assumes
representations of past language experience rather than abstract
grammar rules. Can anyone tell me more?
