Dear Sara,
Thanks so much for replying with the reference. I will check into it as
soon as I can! This surveying kind of source is just what I'm looking for
to get a better idea of the many perspectives out there regarding grammar
and teaching.

Sarah,
I am rarely able to dip into this list, but Kolln's _Rhetorical Grammar_
and the references she lists are helpful. Terence Odlin's edited
collection, _Perspectives on Pedagogical Grammar_ (Cambridge, 1992),
offers a variety of "perspectives," many from an L2 point of view.
Good luck with your research!

Dear ATEG Members,
My name is Sarah Wilson, and I am a graduate student in technical
communication at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. I am working on a
research paper about rhetorical grammar (for my Intro to Rhetoric
course), and I recently subscribed to your listserv. My intent was to
learn what the current issues are in the teaching of grammar and possibly
to find the best resources.
What I am looking for are scholarly/respected resources on the value of
grammar inside and outside the classroom and on the rhetorical nature of
grammar. Could any of you point me to resources where I might find
discussions of such topics? I want to explore the relationship between
rhetoric and grammar and how that relationship is critical to teaching
grammar effectively.
I would appreciate any direction you might be able to give me. Currently,
I am using the November 1996 issue of English Journal,
which was dedicated solely to the educational debate on the teaching of
grammar, as a starting point for my research.
