I can't help David Fahey's student with secondary sources, but I think
there is a great deal of room for research on the topic. Many smaller
newspapers relied heavily on alcoholic beverage advertisers (or so it
would appear from the space sold). Nor were temperance papers always so
scrupulous in checking the contents of beverages and patent medicines
they advertised. Conversely, editors of temperance papers often
emphasized the fact that they did not take ad money from saloons,
brewers, or distillers (and would use the point to solicit other
advertisers or to explain the need to keep subscription revenues current).

Hope this helps.
