Elizabeth --
You might want to get in touch with David Ingle (e-mail: [log in to unmask]) who has been interested in the history of music and alcohol. I have a feeling he's more interested in drinking songs than in temperance songs, but he has collected material on (and has performance tapes that include) both.
I received a leaflet today from him announcing a conference on Drink, Drama, Poetry and Song on
Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Maliotis Cultural Center, 50 Goddard Ave., Brookline, NA 617-522-2899.
"Ten scholars discuss how drinking societies (taverns, pubs and cafes) have fostered song, poetry and theater. And how these art forms reflect values and dehaviors of traditional drinking societies -- both constructive and destructive. Roundtables lead to open discussions with the audience."
10 am - 1 pm:
Dwight Heath, Drink & ritual
Carl Ruch, A folklore history of Bacchus
Patricia Rosenmeyer, Love and wine in Greek poetry
George Light, Shakespeare and the Renaissance tavern
Laurence Senelick, Origins of music hall in London clubs
2 pm - 4:30 pm:
David Ingle, Irish self-images in folk songs on drink
Bill Williams, Paddy's image in US stage songs
Madelon Powers, Society and folklore in the saloon
Elijah Wald, Song and drink in rural America
4:30 pm - 6 pm: Talk and demonstration: Music and culture in the Parisian cafe
Scott Haine, with Leslie Holmes (soprano)
People must register in advance, at no cost, with David Ingle, 508-879-0361, [log in to unmask]
