TIMOTHY SHAY ARTHUR was one of antebellum America's favorite writers.
According to James D. Hart in THE POPULAR BOOK, Arthur wrote "over 5% of
all the volumes of fiction published in the 1840s" (109). The "Maine Law"
debates and popular songs from the stage adaptations of his most famous
novel, TEN NIGHTS IN A BAR-ROOM (1854), sold more than one million copies
of that book alone, in just six years. Below is what I believe to be a
complete bibliography of Arthur's writings, chronologically arranged by
first publication date.

Most of these works probably appeared first in serial form, for Arthur was
a prodigious contributor to several Baltimore, and, after 1841,
Philadelphia magazines, including Godey's Lady Book and Arthur's Home
Magazine. Arthur was true to the temperance cause until his death in
1885, but he wrote more than straight temperance fiction. As the titles
should suggest, he wrote children's literature, history, and advice
manuals for men and women. He also used fiction to write about business
ethics, marriage, and even with the then-unspeakable subject of divorce.

This bibliography is adapted from that offered by Warren French, in Lewis
Leary, editor, American Literature to 1900 (New York: St. Martin's, 1980).
I typed it up for my own use, and then realized it might be handy for
others. Likewise, if anyone has bibliographies for other temperance
writers, 19th or 20th century, the forum (at least me) would love to see
them.

Some of the titles are a scream, and/or suggestive of what must be a great
resource for those interested in how 19th century temperance reformers
thought and lived in everyday life. My experience with Arthur has
been that he's readable, and at times, quite comic, though perhaps
not intentionally so. Enjoy the bib! Jon M, U-Iowa
