RE: Two cents worth - a case study
 
The Case: A new business organization School Learning Inc.
(consultants and managers) have been asked by the school board to
run a typical middle school of 6-7-8 th graders as a charter
school. The total enrollment is 750 ( 250 each of 12, 13 14 year
olds ). We need want a plan ( process ) for becoming a learning
organization.
 
The fixed costs are $6000 per student, now divided 50% salaries,
50% administration, food, janitorial, maintenance,
communications, utilities ( capital cost in place of rent is 12%
) and other costs. ( 4.5 million operation budget ). (
construction of 40 rooms - at $65,000 per room plus common
facilities ( classrooms are 50 % of the 5.5 million facility =
550,000 rent ). The average cost per teacher, including benefits
is $ 37,000 x 40 = 1.5 million of the 2.25 million in
professional salaries. A goal is to change the balance to 75%
instruction, and 25% overhead, which would promote a class size
of 10 or less.(90 classroom teachers).
