Subject: Re: Campus Firewatch Update 02.12.01

I just returned from the North Central Regional Fire Code Development
meeting in Denver. Just to let you know our committee submitted a proposal
to NFPA 101 that would require existing dormitories to install automatic
sprinklers. We will wait and see how the technical commitee reacts (I have
a good idea). Our committee is very dedicated to this issue as well as
sprinklers in any residential setting.

Dormitory Fire
University of Vermont
Burlington, VT

An unattended candle in a dormitory room started a fire that caused
$4,000.00 in damage. The fire was contained to the room of origin by a
police officer who closed the door to the room.

It was reported that the fire alarm system failed during the incident and
did not activate. One resident reported attempting to pull four or five
fire alarm pull stations, and then people wound up going door to door to
alert the occupants. According to the university, the 28-year old fire
alarm system was disabled by a short-circuit in a heat detector.

The following information was provided by media accounts and university
officials.

Dormitory Fire-Sprinkler Save
Rowan University
Glassboro, NJ

A fire was started in a dormitory room by a faulty electric fan motor. The
fire was contained to the room of origin by the activation of the room's
sprinkler system. (See related article about the fire protection program at
Rowan University in "Fire Protection Improving" in the September, 2000 issue
of Campus Firewatch.)
