Dear Students,
As the manager of the Spednet listserv I try to share information on a broad array of topics relevant to being a teacher in today's complex American society. I forwarded an e-mail to the list-serv from the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit organization that has as one of its missions the desire to create safe school environments for ALL children in school in America.
This e-mail, titled "A Call for Religious Tolerance" has caused deep offense to a reader and I wish to publicly apologize to this person and anyone else who may have been offended. In no way did I intend to promote a particular agenda through the list-serv, but merely to inform. This article was perhaps too volatile of a topic to share via a non-discussion oriented tool like the list-serv.
First, I apologize to anyone I may have offended. Please do not read the e-mail as my "advice" but rather think of it as a topic worthy of consideration by all of us who do or prepare to teach in diverse public schools in the United States.
In this vein, I offer the opportunity to discuss this topic in a more open environment where varying perspectives and voices might all be heard. Please let me know if you are interested in dialoguing about this topic and I will be most happy to find an evening and a space where all viewpoints and ideas are shared as we grapple with very real dilemmas in our complex American public schools.
Sincerely,
Molly Kelly-Elliott
