WELCOME
Welcome to SPEDNET News. We hope to keep our special ed majors and minors
informed about what's happening in special education here at Miami. We will
send out information about advising, upcoming conferences, faculty and
students, volunteer opportunities, our Student Council for Exceptional
Children, and other items of interest to all of you. Check for news at least
once a week. Should you have a question about your DARRS, contact me directly
at the e-mail address above. We look forward to working with you this year!

Advising
Student teaching applications are due. You may pick one up in the student
teaching office. Make sure to have your application checked and signed by an
advisor and turn it in September 17 or 18. Our special education student
teaching supervisors and I will make the final determination on student
teaching placements, but you may indicate your first and second choice of
teachers/locations if you have them. Please recognize that the Student
Teaching Office cannot accommodate changes in student teaching placements,
once these have been determined. We will try our best to accommodate your
first or second choice if you have indicated one.
In order to student teaching, you must have a GPA of 2.25 and have
completed all special ed courses (may take EDP 478 concurrently). Also, you
should have filled out an application to the teacher certification program and
taken a speech/hearing screening and turned in your PPST or ACT/SAT scores.

Students who plan to take reading (EDT 316) and/or math (EDT 318) methods next
semester should fill out a green form in 301B McGuffey. Students cannot
register for these classes through MUCAREs. For special education majors to
be accepted into EDT 316/318 you must have completed EDP 201, 256, 220 and
have junior standing.

Those of you who need a speech/hearing screening (required for application to
all Teacher Certification programs) should go to 80 Bachelor Hall on one of

Update on New Standards
The new standards for teacher training programs will go into effect for
freshman who enter in the fall of 1998. Instead of categorical certifications
(SBH, DH, LD, MH), there will be more "generic" Intervention Specialist
licensures: Mild/Moderate, Moderate/Severe, Early Childhood Intervention, and
Gifted. Our Intervention Specialist committee is working on developing the
licensure standards. Several special ed majors are on this committee. If you
are interested in participating, let me know.
